How to Merge Duplicate Google Maps Listings
Duplicate listings split your reviews, confuse customers, and hurt your visibility. Here's why they happen and how to fix them.
Why duplicates happen
- A previous employee or agency created a second listing
- Your business moved address and a new listing was auto-generated
- A rebrand or name change created a fresh profile instead of updating the old one
- Google's system occasionally auto-generates listings from directory data
How to merge them
- Search your business name and note every listing that appears
- Identify which listing has more reviews/history — this is usually the one to keep
- If you own both, Google often merges automatically within a few weeks of the duplicate being flagged
- If not, submit a request through Google Business Profile support, or mark the duplicate as "permanently closed" (only if you're certain it won't self-merge)
- Monitor over the following weeks to confirm reviews and photos consolidate onto the surviving listing
What if Google won't merge them?
Sometimes manual intervention is needed — especially if the listings have different addresses or categories on file. This is where a documented appeal with clear evidence (business license, utility bill, photos) tends to move things faster than repeated automatic requests.
